First Day at The Learning Corner

Today was Andrea's first official day at her daycare centre. It's called The Learning Corner (from here on in, a.k.a. TLC). Daddy dropped her off around 8:15 this morning, and Mommy picked her up around 3:40 this afternoon.

Andrea's first day went . . . okay.

They said she started crying about 10 minutes after Daddy left, and to be forewarned, she will probably cry as soon as he drops her off tomorrow (she'll catch on that she's staying, and Daddy's going!). But they said Daddy did the right thing today, and should continue to do the same thing each day--a quick good-bye is best.

She only slept for 10 minutes there. They tried rocking her, taking her for a walk, singing, etc. She fell asleep on Miss J. for 10 minutes; and as soon as they tried to lay her down, Andrea would wake up and cry.

But the teachers said these events are normal when they start the program, and Andrea will adjust soon.

On the positive side, they said she ate and drank really well. They didn't have to use any of her bottles (she used a sippy cup all day), and she ate all the food they gave her (she didn't use any of the jar food we sent). So, there's some progress/adjustment already. I hear she had a Thanksgiving dinner-style lunch, and gobbled it up! She also had some breadsticks, dip, and juice for a snack. Yum!

They also said, in general, she had a really good day with them.

When I got there, she was just finishing her afternoon snack. She was so excited, she started yelling, "Hi! Mama! Hi!" But when I went around the corner to grab her stroller, she started to sob! Poor baby! She thought I was leaving her there! I could hear the teachers reassuring her that Mommy would be right back. As soon as I reappeared, she broke into a big smile again. Ouch--that really tugged at the heartstrings. I really didn't expect her to react that way, especially since she's normally so laid-back. I guess Andrea's just dealing with a bit of an adjustment period, which is to be expected.

Anyway, she is sleeping right now. As soon as we got home, I put her in her crib, and she curled right up. Poor baby!

On top of it all, she's still got the tail-end of her cold.

Add to that: she's cutting I-don't-know-how-many teeth right now. I'd say at least 3, that I can see clearly. So, everything's a drooling-chewing-clingy fest right now. It's probably not the best time to be dealing with new faces, a new environment, and a new schedule, no matter how great it is. ;p

Oh mommy! Her day was more than "okay"....it was absolutely normal. :)
How wonderful that she can react as any contented healthy baby does...she misses mommy and daddy, but she is curious enough and resilient enough to take on the new challenges of learning. What a positive experience for her. She will learn that it's okay for mommy and daddy to leave. She knows they will be back :) Explore the world Andrea! It is a wonderful place. :)
